medium

From the Latin medius — the middle, the midst, the material or conduit.

Meditation: Medium

Practice: Meeting the Medium

This practice invites you into the in-between, where the medium begins to reveal itself. It’s about stepping into a dialogue with the material before you, sensing how it wishes to be shaped, and discovering which medium can carry your insight faithfully. Here, the work is not about force but about finding—allowing Reality to guide you toward the form that fits.

1. Preparation: Entering the In-Between

Before you begin your act of making, pause. Reflect on the insights and glimpses you have encountered in previous practices. Let these impressions sit within you, unhurried, as you prepare to enter the midst of creation.

The medium will emerge from this place.

Quiet Reflection: Sit with the materials or tools you might use. Gaze at them without expectation. What draws you? What resists? This is not a decision, but a noticing. Write down or sketch any impressions that arise as you observe the different mediums around you.

2. Opening to the Medium: Sensing Its Nature

Select a few materials, each with a different character: clay, paper, fabric, sound, or even the space in which you wish to move. Spend time with each one, not to judge, but to listen. How does it respond to your touch? What does it whisper back when you hold it, shape it, or simply let it be?

Exploration: Spend a few moments engaging with each medium. Run your hands over its surface, feel its texture. Does it bend? Does it resist? Let yourself become aware of the qualities that surface as you work with it.

Journal Reflection: Write down any thoughts or impressions that arise as you explore. Does one medium seem more attuned to the insight you wish to express? Which material seems to invite you into a deeper dialogue?

3. Finding the Fit: Letting the Medium Reveal Itself

Now, choose one medium that feels most aligned with your insight. This is not about choosing what’s easy or familiar; it’s about sensing which material resonates with what you’ve glimpsed. Sit with this medium for a moment longer and allow it to unfold before you.

Statement of Intention: Silently or aloud, say: “I listen for what this medium will reveal. I invite it to show the form most fitting for what I have seen.”

Engagement: Begin to work with the medium, letting it guide the form. This is not about imposing your will but about exploring how it moves, bends, or responds. Notice how the medium shapes you as much as you shape it.

4. Attuning to Resistance: Finding Harmony

As you work, you may encounter moments of resistance—the medium might not behave as you expect, or it may not immediately align with your vision. This is part of the process. Resistance is the medium’s way of guiding you back to its nature, to the form it wishes to hold.

Pause and Adjust: When you sense resistance, pause. Do not force.

Instead, ask yourself: What is this medium asking of me? Adjust your touch, your movements, and notice how the medium responds. This is where the dialogue deepens.

5. Shaping the Dwelling: Creating with Care

Continue your work, focusing on dwelling within the process rather than rushing to the outcome. With each gesture, each touch, you are creating a space where Reality and the medium meet. Let this process be a discovery, not a conquest.

Notice the Moments of Fit: As you shape, notice when the medium seems to resonate with the insight you carry. This is a moment of alignment, where you sense that the material has taken on a life of its own. Write down or reflect on these moments as they arise.

6. Closing the Practice: Letting the Work Stand

Step back and let the work stand as it is. You have entered the midst, met the medium with care, and created a space where something new can dwell. It is not perfect; it is not finished. But it is a form that has emerged from your partnership with the material.

Gratitude for the Medium: Express gratitude for the dialogue with the medium. Silently or aloud, say: “I honor the medium that has guided my hands. I am grateful for what has been revealed in this space between.”

Reflection: Journal your experience. What did the medium teach you in this process? How did it shape your understanding, your vision? How might this practice inform the way you approach making in the future?
